Good Questions to Ask in a Tarot Reading

Most people walk into a tarot reading with something on their mind but no idea how to put it into words. That's completely normal, and it's worth a few minutes of thought before you arrive, because the way a question is framed shapes everything that follows.

Open questions work better than yes or no

"Will I get the job?" leaves the cards very little to work with. "What should I understand about this job opportunity?" opens the door to something more useful: what's working in your favour, what might be holding you back, and what to pay attention to next.

A simple rule of thumb: if your question can be answered with one word, try rephrasing it so it starts with what or how.

Keep the focus on you

Questions about another person's private thoughts ("Is he thinking about me?") tend to lead to guesswork. Questions about your side of the situation tend to lead somewhere real. Try "What do I need to know about where this relationship is heading?" or "How can I show up better in this friendship?"

A few questions that work well

  • What am I not seeing clearly about this situation?
  • What would help me move forward with this decision?
  • What energy am I bringing into this relationship?
  • What should I focus on over the next few months?
  • What is this challenge trying to teach me?

One question or many?

For a focused question, a Mini Tarot Reading is often enough. If you have several areas of life on your mind (work, love, family, a move), a Full Tarot Reading gives the cards space to speak to each of them. For matters of the heart specifically, the Mini Love Reading is built around that one theme.

It's fine to arrive without a question

Some of the most meaningful readings start with "I'm not sure, I just felt like I should come in." Madeline can let the cards lead, and very often the real question surfaces on its own partway through.
